Abortion is a hot topic. The act of abortion was federalized in 1973 in the United States. Recently, the United States Supreme Court reversed that ruling. Individual states now must decide on the legality of abortion. Apart from the law is abortion an unrighteous act? Is abortion a sin? Does the bible say anything about it? How should Christians navigate the subject of abortion?
Life begins at conception. The willful taking of innocent life is murder and violates the sixth commandment. Progressive Christians celebrate abortion. Many scientists agree that life begins at conception but unborn children are not persons. The waters are murky. The Bible indirectly discusses abortion. Is abortion a sin? Yes.
Bible Verses About Life In The Womb And Before
Psalm 139:13 For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Isaiah 44:24 This is what the Lord, your Redeemer who formed you from the womb, says: I am the Lord, who made everything; who stretched out the heavens by myself; who alone spread out the earth.
Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I separated you for myself. I have appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.
Luke 1:15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord and will never drink wine or beer. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb.
Luke 1:41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped inside her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 1:15-16 But when God, who from my mother’s womb set me apart and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I could preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone.
Ephesians 1:4 For he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him.
Is Abortion a Sin — Penalty For Killing the Unborn
The accidental death of the unborn was the death penalty.
Exodus 21:22-25 When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for an eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
The intentional taking of human life was judged with the death penalty.
Leviticus 24:17 Whoever takes a human life shall surely be put to death.
Exodus 23:7 Stay far away from a false accusation. Do not kill the innocent and the just, because I will not justify the guilty.
Is Abortion a Sin? Why Do Some Christians Support Abortion
Regrettably, not all pastors have a Biblical worldview. Some are social justice warriors. Others are wolves in sheep’s clothing. Still, others are pretending to be pastors who spew secular humanism.
Christians are in the world and of the world. The Church in America is sickly and in need of a transfusion. The Berean method has fallen by the wayside.
Pastors are preaching topically more than ever. Biblical context is no longer a concern to most church members. Doctrine is viewed as boring and outdated.
Popular sermons are life-affirming and life-enhancing. Sermons about sin, right living, suffering, sacrifice, and obedience have gone the way of the dinosaur.
2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
Is Abortion a Sin? Separation of Church And State
Tragically, the abortion issue has become a political hot potato. It’s become a left or right issue and not a Biblical issue.
Churches that lean right protest outside of abortion clinics. Left-leaning congregations speak of social justice, women’s rights, and poverty.
The separation of church and state is not a constitutional issue. We the people are protected from the State. The government is not allowed to mandate a state-sponsored religion. So the separation of church and state argument is a desperation ploy.
States Where Abortion Is Legal
Unsurprisingly abortion remains legal and celebrated in many states.
State | Legal or Illegal | State Law |
California | Legal | CA Constitutional Law before Roe (1969) |
Connecticut | Legal | State Law |
Illinois | Legal | State Law and upheld by State Supreme Court |
New Jersey | Legal | NJ constitutional |
New York | Legal | State law |
Oregon | Legal | State law |
Vermont | Legal | State law |
Washington | Legal | State law |
These eight states are in desperate need of prayer.
States Where Abortion Is Illegal
State | Illegal or Soon To Be |
Kentucky | Illegal |
Louisiana | Illegal |
Oklahoma | Illegal |
South Dakota | Illegal |
Texas | Illegal |
Is Abortion Unforgivable?
There is only one unforgivable sin and that is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.
Murder is a forgivable sin.
I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
When we confess our sins, even abortion, Jesus is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Here is an article that I wrote about justification.
Fantastic Pro-Life Teaching
I found this conversation between Scott Klusendorf and Alisa Childers to be extremely helpful. In this discussion, they cover six common objections to pro-life arguments.
If you don’t have solid answers for each of these objections please watch the entire video.
- Pro-Life Is a Religious view
- Abortion must be legal or women will die in droves
- The unborn are human but not persons
- The Bible does not condemn or mention abortion
- Abortion is morally complex
- Men can’t speak about abortion
Here is the logical argument in support of life that is used in this episode:
- Premise #1 — It is wrong to intentionally kill an innocent human being.
- Premise #2 — Abortion kills an innocent human being
- Conclusion — Therefore abortion is wrong
This argument is logically airtight and easy to remember. It’s neither religious nor political. You will still get objections when using it, though.
Why?
Abortion is emotionally charged. Logic is often kicked to the curb during an emotionally charged conversation.
Do your best to get through the premises and conclusion before answering the inevitable barrage of “What about” and “Yes, but” non-sequiturs.
Is Abortion A Sin? Emotions and Victims
It’s wrong to kill an innocent human being. Abortion kills an innocent human being. Therefore, abortion is wrong.
Logically we’re airtight. Emotionally…well…
The abortion industrial complex has mastered public relations. They choose their words and phrases carefully. They have left-leaning politicians in the bag. Mainstream media supports abortion.
Since 1973, it’s estimated that more than 60,000,000 babies have been murdered in the name of reproductive freedom.
Women who have abortions are victims. Aborted babies are unwelcome invaders being permanently evicted.
Abortions allow women to reach their full potential. Poverty is prevented through abortions.
These emotional and illogical arguments have been bought hook, line, and sinker. Often you will need to drill through several layers of junk to have a decent conversation.
There will be times when firmness is necessary. Other times gentleness will be the best approach.
Be led by the Spirit of God during your interactions when discussing abortion.
His grace is sufficient!
Protect The Innocent
Proverbs 24:11-12 Rescue those being taken off to death, and save those stumbling toward slaughter. If you say, “But we didn’t know about this,” won’t he who weighs hearts consider it? Won’t he who protects your life know? Won’t he repay a person according to his work?
