What Do The Psalms Say About Riches

Psalm 39:6 (NASB) Certainly every person walks around as a fleeting shadow; They certainly make an uproar for nothing; He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.

Our life is but a vapor (James 4:14). Riches can be a trap when we pursue them instead of God.

Psalm 49:5-9 (CSB) Why should I fear in times of trouble? The iniquity of my foes surrounds me. They trust in their wealth and boast of their abundant riches. Yet these cannot redeem a person or pay his ransom to God—yet these cannot redeem a person or pay his ransom to God—so that he may live forever and not see the Pit.

Our money is no good in heaven.

Psalm 62:10 Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

Psalm 63:5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips, my mouth will praise you.

Contentment is vital.

Psalm 73:12 (ESV) Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches.

Riches are not always mentioned positively.

Psalm 112:3 Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever.

Psalm 119:14 I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.

Savvy Stewardship In The Psalms — Riches

Psalm 49:10 For he sees that even wise people die; the foolish and the stupid alike perish and leave their wealth to others.

Denzel Washington sharing the truth.

Who Shall Dwell On The Holy Hill?

Psalm 15:5 He does not lend his money at interest, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. One who does these things will never be shaken.

Savvy Stewardship In The Psalms — Gold

Psalm 19:10 (CSB) They are more desirable than gold—than an abundance of pure gold; and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb.

What is more desirable than gold? The law of the Lord and the fear of the Lord and the testimony of the Lord are all better than gold.

Psalm 21:3 For you meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of fine gold upon his head.

Psalm 105:37 (NKJV) He also brought them out with silver and gold, And there was none feeble among His tribes.

When the Israelites departed Egypt they were loaded with money and in good health.

Psalm 119:72 (ESV) The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Psalm 135:15 (ESV) The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands.

Another fair warning about the human propensity to fall in love with money.

Savvy Stewardship In The Psalms — Debt

Psalm 37:21 (NASB) The wicked borrows and does not pay back, but the righteous is gracious and gives.

Debt is mentioned less in the Bible than Dave Ramsey thinks. He has ostensibly built a debt strawman. This antagonist created by him does not exist in the pages of the Bible. Here’s an article that I wrote reiterating that Disagreeing With Dave Ramsey Won’t Send Anyone To Hell.

However, the Bible never encourages debt. It’s neither disallowed nor sinful. Going into debt is often a sign of discontent. Discontentment often indicates our displeasure with God’s providence.

Resist the urge to go into debt to appear wealthy or to buy something that you think you deserve. Debt is not your friend. Irresponsible credit card use is a black hole of financial frustration.

Prosperity In The Psalms

Psalm 25:12-13 Who, then, are those who fear the Lord? He will instruct them in the ways they should choose. They will spend their days in prosperity, and their descendants will inherit the land.

The Fear Of The Lord leads to good things.

Psalm 35:27 (NASB) May those shout for joy and rejoice, who take delight in my vindication; And may they say continually, “The Lord be exalted, Who delights in the prosperity of His servant.”

Psalm 37:11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Psalm 73:3 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

God never promises that Christians will be the wealthiest here on earth.

Psalm 128:5 May the Lord bless you from Zion; may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life.

Savvy Stewardship

The Psalms can provide great hope and encouragement when life gets tough. Trust me it will get tough. Here’s a link to one of my most popular articles titled, Psalms Of Hope When Money Is Tight.
